There’s a drumming noise inside my head that starts when you’re around.
I swear that you could hear it, it makes such an almighty sound. Louder than sirens, louder than bells. Sweeter than heaven, and hotter than hell.
Florence + the Machine - Splendour, You’ve Got the Love
Florence + the Machine - Howl
Beautifully Dark.

I don’t remember the first time we met. But I do remember how we became acquainted. Triple J Hottest 100 Vol. 17; Dog Days Are Over. After a couple of play presses a crush with Florence + The Machine developed. Who knew that in a couple of months Lungs would grow into a love affair that competed with the sounds of Life for Rent, A Rush of Blood to the Head and What was Left.
The proposal happened at Splendour in the Grass. Florence’s voice and The Machines’ harmony created a mesmerising mix of lust and euphoria. But you don’t care about that, you want to know the juicy bits. No, I didn’t propose. Florence + The Machine did. “Splendour, you’ve got the love”. That’s what she said. How could I say no? The honeymoon was on my birthday. I woke up to Florence + The Machine playing on Sunrise. We got married the following day in JB Hi-Fi at Galleries Victoria. (I still have the marriage certificate and can tell you the exact time it happened, but I don’t want to appear as the clingy type.)

The wedding gift included free video-clip downloads of the first 5 singles (Kiss with a Fist, Dog Days Are Over [2.0; the Legs version], Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up), Drumming Song, and You’ve Got the Love).
There’s no denying the darkness of Lungs. But by being presented in such melodic way, the sorrow that often accompanies beautiful lyrical storytelling is deminished. And the result is a paradoxical infection of aching fun with symptoms including repeat listens and jolly outcries of hurt. E.g. ”I’m not calling you a liar, just don’t lie to me”, “I took a knife and cut out her eye… that’s why she sleeps with one eye open”.
To sum up my newly formed relationship with Florence + The Machine I leave you with a piece which I think charmingly captures the affair I have, and that you will undoubtedly have, with Lungs.
You hit me once,
I hit you back,
You gave a kick,
I gave a slap,
You smashed a plate over my head,
Then I set fire to our bed
